It’s no secret that Tom Brady has benefited from coaching. His relationships with Bill Belichick, Alex Guerrero, along with his coaches at University of Michigan and others, put him in the position to earn his “greatest” title.
Certainly his talent and hard work had something to do with it, but more than that, he had the desire to get better. His willingness to hear the advice of his coaches allowed him to transform from a somewhat gawky and awkward 6th round recruit in 2000 into The GOAT.
Hearing feedback can be hard. Understanding your strengths and weaknesses, challenges and roadblocks, however, can can bring your performance to the next level. By becoming more self-aware, creating a plan, and holding yourself accountable – your relationship with conflict, challenge, and power will improve. Communication and listening skills, how you present yourself, not to mention your confidence – all get better with coaching. Every leader can use the perspective of an experienced coach.
What does it look like?
Executive Coaching Framework
ESTABLISH expectations and identify initial areas for improvement and development
ASSESS strengths and weaknesses, and gain further insight
CREATE a plan that clearly defines priority needs, action steps, and timing for work
CONDUCT ongoing coaching sessions, work through your plan, address road blocks, and maintain accountability for progress
MEASURE results and reinforce learning and new behaviors through repetition
“Talent sets the floor, character sets the ceiling.”
You Are the Coach
Tom Brady knows that as a leader his attitude and behavior affect the team as a whole, and that his performance in a bubble would have limited impact. The coaching or mentoring responsibility that comes with leadership shouldn’t be taken lightly. Who you are as a leader will translate to the success of your employees and, therefore, your company. By building trust, providing an example, and listening, the leader who understands his or her role as “coach” has the ability to build a culture of success.
The Benefits of Executive Coaching
In recent years executive coaching has evolved into a tool widely recognized to rapidly increase leadership effectiveness and levels of personal and professional achievement – for anyone who wishes to accomplish more. According to studies completed by The Institute of Coaching, coaching has a range of positive impacts on the careers and lives of those who make the commitment.
- Empowers individuals and encourages them to take responsibility
- Increases employee and staff engagement
- Improves individual performance
- Helps identify and develop high potential employees
- Helps identify both organizational and individual strengths and development opportunities
- Helps to motivate and empower individuals to excel
- Demonstrates organizational commitment to human resource development
Are You Ready?
Executive coaching is a unique partnership that generates professional and personal insight so you can move beyond the near-sighted and self-imposed personal and professional limitations you might place on yourself. The key to knowing whether or not you are ready to absorb the benefits goes beyond being aware that “you don’t know what you don’t know.” It goes beyond the fundamental idea that leaders are responsible for staying ahead of changes and challenges their company may face. Just like Tom Brady, you are ready for an executive coach when you want to elevate your game.
