Leaders are used to facing challenges. But after being inundated with the unexpected over the past year, you may be hoping for a little break.

Every year we spend time laying out or at least adjusting our strategic business plans at least once to prepare for the most obvious obstacles. The more experience you earn, the easier the planning may become, but don’t settle for the status quo. Especially with your leadership journey.

Here we are in January with a chance for a fresh start. Although it is part of what keeps life interesting, also gather as many facts and perspectives as you can in addition to the lessons you have already learned. An open mind pairs well with confidence. Here are three ways you can prepare yourself for whatever this year brings.

1. Stay current on the trends… Communication techniques, generational dynamics, personality impactfullness (like EQ), among others areas where leadership is evolving are important to keep an eye on. Although leadership fundamentals are unlikely to change (accountability, communication, trust), how they are executed and perceived tend to evolve as new generations enter and exit the workforce.

2. Nurture your “bench”… Growing leadership at all levels is simply a CYA policy for your company’s future. You have leaders in mind to fill roles that become important or available as your company grows or your leadership team ages out or evolves into new roles. By establishing growth and updating career path opportunities, you can ensure that those second string players are engaged and prepared for what may lie ahead.

3. Leverage the objective viewpoint… Knowing how well your business is doing from the numbers is entirely different than thoroughly understanding dynamics. It’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day, year-to-year flow of your business. This includes the impact that you, as well as other leaders or those on your management team, have on how your company functions. An objective perspective can be a challenge to maintain. Tools such as personality, team, leadership, and employee engagement assessments can help.
