The best leaders recognize their role is not only building a strong business foundation while keeping the bottom line in mind, but also empowering the people who work for them to create purpose in their lives by working for something they believe in. Whether you want to be or not, you are a role model and your reactions to uncertainty, successes, and failures have a great impact.

This is no small task. Talking about the important fundamentals of leadership and how our current situation may alter your strategic approach will help set things straight in your own mind, so that you can empower your people to do their best.

Delegating From a Distance – Setting People Up for Success in a Virtual World

  • Assessment  Look at the issue objectively; without any judgement on your success/failure as a Leader. Have you set proper expectations? Does it come from lack of ability or low motivation?
  • Approach  Define your approach: Consider their individual motivators and stressors. Every employee needs to be motivated in order for performance management to be successful.
  • Conversation  Prep and visualize how you want the conversation to go. You can deliver even the harshest of messages gracefully as long as your intentions are good. Have key talking points & areas of improvement.
  • Commitment  This step may be the most important, but is often glossed over. Ask “Do I have your commitment on this?” If they don’t respond with a definitive “yes”, you may have a larger issue. Be sure to plan follow-up.
