“Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them and it will change your life.” -Amy Poehler

High performance teams are more productive and profitable, and simply more fun to be part of. Although each team develops a personality of its own, leaders are the ultimate drivers of team success.

Performance Optimization Quickstart

Share the Spotlight Being a leader doesn’t mean doing it all yourself. Nor does it mean always being the one out in front. It’s important to have a team of people with a variety of strengths, and sharing the leadership based on strengths can boost innovation and communication.

Establish the Ground Rules All teams, have norms, rules, or guidelines that guide the behavior of team members. In most cases they are not written down. Norms can be positive and help the team, but they can also be counterproductive. Spend some time establishing a set of ground rules create a trusted environment.

Examine Conflict Resolution Creating consensus among team members can get contentious, but expressing your opinion doesn’t need to bruise relationships. Civilized disagreements mean we explain our positions and sometimes agree to disagree. Important decisions sometimes require substantial agreement versus a unanimous vote.

Consider an Organizational Shift Many companies continue to keep their organizational structure as flat as possible. If it isn’t broken don’t fix it, right? A change from hierarchical to a more fishnet organization structure demonstrates the partnerships, teams, and interpersonal relationships that can make companies thrive.
